Over 50 Ugandans have been detained in Morukatipe Prison located in Osukuru sub-county of Tororo district. At the moment the individuals are said to have been detained for a week or more because they were found walking at curfew hours. Our sources say many of these including essential workers volunteering at Malaba border point were walking from work going home when the police arrested them on the evening of 31st August 2020.
This has raised the fears among the community members building theories that this act by the men in uniform may drive Tororo in the position of being the next hot spot of the covid19 infection.
Relatives of the victims also express worries about the well-being of their people since the arrests do not exclude those that have contracted the disease from the safe individuals. It is noted that the victims have been detained on orders of OC Agaba of Tororo Police Station who is alleged of not giving them a fair hearing; this situation has seen many leaving their families helpless in an economically struggling period to stay in prison.
Tororo is one of the border districts where the ban on public transport is still active and; currently many natives still walk miles to reach their destinations. Although movement outside border districts is currently banned in a bid to prevent the spread of Covid-19, lockdowns on some border districts have been lifted and Malaba among others continue to grapple with the lockdown and its effects.
The natives also point out a dissatisfaction point on the Government food relief that has never reached the wanainchi to date.
