The hospital has been rehabilitated and expanded from 100 to 200 beds to improve health service delivery in Yumbe District and the entire West Nile Region.

The progress of works at the facility stands at 97% and the stage of completion is expected by December 2020.

The expansion works include; Construction of a new expanded Out Patient Department, Accident and Emergency unit, 3 new Operation rooms and 3 delivery suites, 40 beds for; maternity ward, Female ward, Male ward, Pediatrics and 32 beds for isolation ward.

At the the facility the Ministry has been able to construct a private wing of 38 new staff housing units and an interns hostel to accommodate 20 interns.

The team was led by Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Dr Diana Atwine and Director General Health Services Dr Henry Mwebesa accompanied by Commissioner Clinical Services Dr Jackson Amone, Commissioner Emergency Medical Services Dr JB Nabohe, Commissioner Maternal and Reproductive Health Services, Dr Jesca Nsungwa Sabiiti and Commissioner Environmental Health Julian Kyomuhangi.

The officials are holding meetings with Regional Referral Hospitals and district health teams, to review cases being referred to the facilities to curb congestion in RRHs.

It is said that many lower health units are taking on a trend of referring to General and Regional Referral Hospitals minor cases that they have the capacity to manage at their level.

“This should be checked as its choking higher facilities with congestion of patients, thus affecting the quality of health care,” Atwine said.

Masaka RRH is among the facilities which are making a good progress; it has reached a 400-bed capacity facility for Maternal and the Child Health Services unit is nearing completion. The hospital also has a Call and Dispatch Centre for EMS services that are supported by KOFIH to ease communication and operations.

Butenga Health Centre IV in Bukomansimbi District has acquired a facility of a new block to house the male and female surgical wards and an accident and emergency ward, with support from KOFIH Uganda.

The officials have met with the district leadership of Kasese to assess the sector needs, putting emphasis on gaps in responding to epidemics and disasters such as floods.

Government is working on permanently resettling the Kilembe Mines hospital to a safer place after rivers Nyamwamba, Mubuku and Nyamugasani, burst their banks from the top of Mt. Rwenzori and destroyed the facility in May this year.

The teams have also held meetings with His Majesty Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa and technical teams from the Tooro Kingdom, and signed an MOU to facilitate the partnership on strengthening health service delivery in the region, mainly on preventive health care officials.

Cultural institutions are known to be appealing and they reach out to many people. They are a niche to enhance awareness for better health lifestyles and to curb ignorance.
