EC releases roadmap for verification of Administrative Units, Preparations for Women Councils and Committees elections in high gear.

The Electoral Commission is undertaking preparatory activities for the conduct of the country-wide verification of administrative units, for the grassroots and national level Women Councils, Committees elections 2022, and Local Council 1 and 2 Elections, in 2023.

The current Women Councils and Committees were elected during the period July – August 2018, and according to the National Women’s Council Act, the leaders’ term of office will expire in August 2022.

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon has also revealed that the current Village/Cell (LC 1) and Parish/Ward (LC 2) Committees were also elected in July 2018 and their term of office will expire in July 2023.

It is important to note that the Electoral Commission conducted the above elections in 60,800 villages/cells and 8,387 parishes in the year 2018 compared to the current 10,259 Parishes/Wards, and 70,512 Villages/cells according to the current statistics as per the Electoral Commission database (2022).

The Electoral Commission is set to conduct the verification and confirmation exercise of all the newly created administrative units across the country in consultation with the respective District/City administrative leadership starting on the 17th to the 26th of March 2022.

The purpose of the exercise will be to establish the legality of the establishments, identify and harmonize any variance in the database of administrative units and either recommend for removal of administrative units that may illegally appear on the list of administrative units which are in existence without a Statutory Instrument.
