CP Enanga added that the suspect had unprotected sex with the victim, with the full knowledge of her HIV status. The victim was examined and immediately put on Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). The suspect was arrested and detained in Police custody.

In another development, the Police have also charged a 20-year-old peasant with Aggravated Defilement of a 3-year-old girl victim at Panya village, Yiki Parish, Madi Okollo district.

The suspect identified as Oleama Jackson 20 of Olali village, was given responsibility by Araka Rabeka, the mother of the victim, for him to look after the baby while the mother went to the market to buy food.

Unfortunately, the suspect took advantage of the girl victim and defiled her according to CP Fred Enanga the Uganda Police Spokesperson.

“He was found red-handed in the act by the elder brother who informed their mother and the matter reported to police.  As a result, the suspect was arrested and detained in custody” says Enanga.

The Police Spokesperson adds that the incidents show how both, male and female juveniles remain vulnerable and targeted by sexual predators and many of these predators not being strangers to victims.

Enanga says that the predators are usually relatives to the victim or acquaintances such as neighbors, siblings, family friends, teachers who appear to be warm, caring, loving and respectful.

This year, the Government of Uganda will commemorate the world aids day on 1st December under a national theme: National Solidarity and a Shared Responsibility towards Ending AIDS.

Uganda has made a lot of progress in responding to the burden of HIV and AIDS over the last four decades. With the 2030 target of ending AIDS insight, it is critical for everyone to reflect on their individual and collective responsibility towards ending AIDS in Uganda.

The HIV prevalence rates in the general population have been reduced from about 18% in the 1990s down to the current 6%. Uganda is now ranked among the first 14 countries globally to have achieved the UNAIDS  2nd and 3rd targets i.e. 90% of all People living with HIV being put on treatment and 90% of those on treatment being viral suppressed.

She has also called upon stakeholders to keep up the commitment towards preventing and ending HIV and AIDS.

Let us maintain the high-level political commitment and action, enhanced community mobilization and engagement for social and behaviour change, respect for the rights of people living with HIV and other vulnerable populations. She added.

This year, the Uganda AIDS Commission has collaborated with one of the Stakeholders i.e. the Cultural institution of Buganda Kingdom to further mobilize communities in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

Kabaka who is also the UNAIDS Ambassador for male engagement in the fight against HIV and AIDS he has contributed greatly towards the national response to HIV and AIDS.

I implore you to keep up the efforts of ending AIDS in Uganda and mobilizing communities to prevent new HIV infections and the support being given to people living with HIV to live productive lives.”
