NUP president Hosts meeting with EU delegates- Bobi wine
The current president of the National Unity Platform and most likely presidential candidate to represent the party, Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi wine shared via his social media handles that that the NUP headquarters in Makerere Kavule had hosted the European Union(EU) delegation, led by their head of mission to Uganda, H.E Jan Sadek the EU Ambassador to Uganda, and the two parties had a meeting.
“As part of our regular #TeamEurope dialogue with political parties in 🇺🇬, Ambassador @JanSadek & 🇪🇺Member States’ Ambassadors to Uganda today met the leadership of @NUP_Ug led by @HEBobiwine. They appreciated the exchange & look forward to engaging with other political parties.” The EU Uganda delegates published this statement on their X platform.
The meeting’s intent was reported to have mainly focused on discussing issues concerning human rights and law enforcement as concerned by the parties.
Bobi wine also took to his X platform stating, “Yesterday, we had a cordial and candid discussion with the delegation of the @EUinUG led by H.E. Jan Sadek. The discussion mainly focused on the worsening human rights situation in our country. While appreciating them for the times they have spoken out about abuse of rights, we appealed to them to do more in furthering human rights and the rule of law. We emphasised that the statements of condemnation should be accompanied by actions.
“However, controversies continue to rise as the general public and specific stakeholders in the so called “struggle” question whether this was not just one of the scams foreign forces like the European Union could utilize to win trust from political sides in the nation for their own benefits.
In specific, an X account labelled UK Official People Power- NUP, an account known to represent supporters of the National Unity Platform based in the United Kingdom, replied to one of the tweets of the EU Uganda criticizing their involvement in Ugandan political affairs.
They stated, “Uganda under dictator @KagutaMuseveni and the @NRMOnline is not a liberal democracy in the European tradition, but a militarized dictatorship. The meaningless ritualised #TeamEurope “dialogue” has not produced compliance on the side of dictator @KagutaMuseveni and the NRM “ruling party” to respect the rule of law and the constitution, stop stealing election, end abduction, arbitrary arrests, torture, enforced disappearances and prolonged detention of political prisoners on trumped-up charges and corruption.Consequently, the EU Ambassador to Uganda @JanSadek @vonderleyen @kajakallas and the @EU_Commissionshould stop hypocrisy over human rights, rule of law and democracy in their relations with the murderous Ugandan dictatorship, and follow the United States @StateDept @USTreasury and the United Kingdom @GOVUK in imposing targeted sanctions on @GovUganda officials responsible for abuses and corruption.”
The political space in Uganda continues to pose questions to different stakeholders just as National elections are around the corner
