Minister Gidudu Accused of Housing Delegates Ahead of NRM Kololo Conference
Emerging Details of the Allegations
With the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Delegates Conference approaching at Kololo, fresh questions have emerged around the campaign style of Hon. Dominic Mafwabi Gidudu, Minister of State for the Elderly.
According to documents and accounts circulating on media, Gidudu has allegedly booked accommodation for more than 300 delegates in guest houses and hostels across eastern Uganda. As a result, rivals suggest the minister is taking extraordinary steps to safeguard support as the conference nears.
A list, whose authenticity this publication has not independently verified, shows bookings in facilities such as Good Samaritan Sisters in Bugujju (54 beds for Buyende, Kamuli and Kaliro delegates), Sky Hostel Bugujju (10 beds for Mukono, Kayunga, Buikwe and Buvuma), and Sedar Hostel Bugujju (50 beds for Jinja and Iganga). Other facilities are listed in Soroti, Tororo, Budaka, and surrounding districts.
Security and Political Reactions
Security sources, anonymously, indicated they are monitoring these arrangements. Meanwhile, some delegates privately described the bookings as unusual compared to past conferences.
Opponents argue the move signals unease within the minister’s camp. Campaign aides for his challenger Ofwono Opondo said the “quiet bookings” reflect a lack of confidence, contrasting them with Opondo’s open engagements and policy pitches.
Gidudu’s Public Record
Efforts to reach Minister Gidudu or his team for comment were unsuccessful by press time. However, in past statements he has defended his stewardship of the elderly portfolio, highlighting initiatives such as moving SAGE payment points to health centres and proposing an annual “Elders’ Health Day.” Supporters within NRM note these achievements and downplay reports of panic.
Growing Pressure Ahead of Kololo
The NRM Delegates Conference, set for later this month at Kololo Independence Grounds, will decide key party flagbearers, including the Eastern Region Older Persons MP slot.
Consequently, both camps are sharpening their strategies. Opondo has emphasised his “Ten-Point Programme” on pensions, SAGE, and health services. While Gidudu faces speculation about the extent of his logistical spending.
The core question, according to analysts, is whether the accommodation claims indicate normal campaign mobilization? or a sign of mounting pressure within the minister’s camp as rivals build momentum.
