The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has officially started the 2025 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations program. This year’s theme is “Embracing security and holistic assessment of learners in a dynamic environment.” (2025 UCE Examinations Uganda)
A Record 432,159 Candidates to Sit for the 2025 UCE Exams
UNEB confirmed that 432,159 candidates from 4,308 centers across the country are sitting for this year’s examinations. This marks an increase from 379,748 candidates in 2024. Of these, 52.1% are females, while 47.9% are males.
The Board also revealed that 154,637 candidates (36%) are sponsored under the Universal Secondary Education (USE) programme, and privately sponsored candidates have risen to 241,246. In addition, 679 candidates are registered under Special Needs Education (SNE), with 190 trained support staff deployed to help them.
UNEB Appeals to Teachers on Strike
UNEB Executive Director Dan N. Odongo appealed to teachers involved in the ongoing industrial action to suspend their strike and support national examinations. He described the exercise as a “national duty that determines the future of thousands of learners.”
“We appreciate the teachers’ dedication over the years and urge them to support us for a few days to ensure success,” Odongo said.
UNEB Issues Fresh Warning on Examination Malpractice
Mr. Odongo emphasized that examination security remains a top priority. He cautioned all stakeholders—teachers, invigilators, scouts, and candidates—against involvement in any malpractice.
UNEB warned the public about fraudsters who sell fake exam papers. The Board’s security team has already intercepted some suspects and urged the public to remain vigilant.
“Possession of any examination paper or related material is a serious offence under the UNEB Act, CAP 259,” Odongo stated.
Convicted offenders face fines up to two thousand currency points or imprisonment of up to ten years. The Board encouraged anyone with credible information about malpractice to call the toll-free line 0800-211-077. Whistleblowers are protected under UNEB’s official policy.
Caution Against Political Campaigns During Exams
The Board also cautioned examination supervisors and invigilators to avoid political involvement during the examination period. Political aspirants were advised not to hold rallies near schools to prevent distractions that may affect candidates’ performance.
Encouragement to Candidates
Mr. Odongo encouraged candidates to stay calm and confident, stressing that exams are meant to assess learning, not to fail students.
“This examination is not an end in itself but a step toward aligning students with their career paths,” he said.
He concluded by invoking blessings:
“May God bless our candidates, our teachers, and all those involved in this national exercise. For God and my Country.”
