KAMPALA – With the Uganda Electoral Commission set to use Biometric Voter Verification Kits in the January 2026 elections, officials are urging voters to confirm their registration details now.
The EC has confirmed three points about the BVVK system: it will be used to verify voters against the National Voters’ Register, voters will need to present a National ID or voter location slip, and the purpose is to curb impersonation and multiple voting.
Dr Patrick Wakida a voter education expert says the most important step citizens can take now is to check that their names appear on the register and that their personal details are correct. Errors in the register, they warn, could lead to verification challenges on polling day.
The Commission has not yet published detailed polling day procedures or contingency measures. It says these will be communicated as part of the official voter education programme scheduled for rollout amidst other electoral preparatory activities.
According to Justice Simon Byabakama the Electoral Commission Chairperson, preparing early reduces stress and confusion on polling day. Voters should wait for official guidance and avoid unofficial sources.
He further guides that eligible Ugandans should use the EC’s official platforms to verify their polling station and voter details as soon as possible.
