KAMPALA – The Uganda Electoral Commission says it is preparing to address public concerns ahead of the rollout of Biometric Voter Verification Kits for the January 2026 elections.
Common questions raised by the public include data privacy, the reliability of the machines, and what happens if a voter’s fingerprints cannot be verified.
According to public guidance issued by the commission chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama ahead of the polls, where fingerprints are unavailable or of poor quality, facial verification may be used instead, and alternative measures would be deployed if technical problems affected the kits.
The EC has continuously stated that the purpose of the BVVK is strictly verification against the National Voters’ Register and that no new biometric data will be collected on polling day.
Speaking to our reporter, Mr Paul Bukenya the Principal Public Relations Officer and Deputy Spokesperson of the commission, asserts that all official information on BVVK will come from the Electoral Commission, and the public is warned against the spread of unverified claims that could cause confusion among the voters.
Voter education on the BVVK is expected to intensify in the weeks leading up to the 2026 general elections.
Citizens with questions are advised to contact the EC via its social media platforms or attend official sensitisation meetings in their districts under schedule being implemented by the regional officers .
