KAMPALA – The Uganda Electoral Commission has confirmed that Biometric Voter Verification Kits, known as BVVK, will be deployed at polling stations across the country for the January 2026 general elections.
According to public guidance issued ahead of the polls, the kits are designed to verify a voter’s identity by matching live biometric data with the National Voters’ Register before a ballot is issued. The process will involve scanning a voter’s National ID or voter location slip, followed by fingerprint or facial verification where necessary.
Electoral officials say the system is intended to uphold the principle of one person, one vote and to reduce cases of impersonation and multiple voting.
Julius Mucunguzi, the Electoral Commission spokesperson, said. “The strongest message ahead of polling day is simple: know your polling station, carry the right identification, understand the verification process, and participate peacefully.”
The Commission has not yet released detailed step-by-step procedures for polling day. It says comprehensive voter education will be rolled out late this month before the elections commence in January 2026. For now, voters are advised to ensure their National ID details are accurate and to rely only on official EC communications.
Citizens are encouraged to watch the EC’s official channels for updates and to prepare their documents early to avoid last-minute issues.
