Mayangayanga-Nakibano piped water project stalls over funds. Mayangayanga-Nakibano piped water project in Mukono district has stalled for the last two years due to the lack of funds.
The project is located in Kimenyede Sub County in Nakifuma County. Started in 2016 using local revenue, the Shillings 500million water project was expected to be completed by 2019.
It was meant to supply clean water to over 340 households in Kimenyede Sub County and also provide five public water stands for homes that cannot afford the connection and maintenance fees. However, Moses Ddumba Musisi, the Community Project Chairperson says that they have failed to get satisfactory answers from the district about the progress of the project for the past two years.
He explains that residents were excited about the project, which would provide them with water cheaply. He explains that 280 homes paid connection fees of Shillings 100, 000 two years back but to date nothing is forthcoming.
According to Musisi, more than 340 homes were expected to get piped water in the first phase of the project. While the second phase would involve the installation of
bigger tanks to increase the capacity of the project but Victoria pumps limited, which was handling the project abandoned it.
Graha Details has established that over 30 homes connected to the water project have been unable to access water because of the failure of the district to pay power bills for the water pump. The rest of the residents in Kimenyede walk for between one or two kilometers to access water from unprotected wells.
Muhamad Lukeera faults the district for violating the contract he signed with them to connect him to the water plant. According to Lukeera, he has waited for so long together with other families to get water, saying they are now considering legal action.
Irene Nakuya, another resident has appealed to district authorities to be considerate to the people who sacrificed their money for connection, saying that they are low-income earners who would have used their money for other developments.
She says that their children are exposed to danger whenever they go through sugarcane plantations to fetch water. Lawrence Mwasa, the LC I chairperson of Nabibugga village is one of those upset about the failure of the district water department to complete the project.
Matiya Kamanya, who convinced residents of Gilinya Village to surrender their land for the project and paying for connection, says residents are unhappy with him.
Mukono LC 5 Chairperson Rev. Peter Bakaluba Musaka has called for calm from the residents, saying they have budgeted to complete the project this financial year. He says that they have allocated more than Shillings 100m to lay pipes in the sub-county.
