The Uganda Police Force Garment factory and CCTV store are on fire. The premises are located at Arch road near Jinja road police station and the fire gutted the place at about 9:30 PM (EAT) on Wednesday 12 December 2021 evening.
The Police Directorate of Logistics and Welfare opened the factory in 2014 in partnership with China Poly Technology, a Chinese firm.
China Poly Technology donated 96 sewing machines to kick start the factory. The factory produced 55,000 uniforms in 2014 for the then 48,000 Police Officers across the country. The factory started producing 100 uniforms each day but has since improved production to over 120 uniforms a day.
The factory has been producing uniforms annually including regular Police Uniforms for each officer as well as extras for foreign trips, pieces of training, and other special activities. The factory employs over 120 workers who work in shifts.
Some of the police officers’ wives have been trained in China on tailoring and material production and by 15 Nov 2015 the production cost had reduced and the cost of each uniform which was at US$27 about Shillings 94,000 had lowered to US$24 (Shilling 84, 0000) thus saving US$3 Shillings 10.000.
While commissioning the police garment factory in the industrial areas today, President Yoweri Museveni said that currently, the government is relying on the private sector for the production of government goods some of which are classified. He explained that companies like the Uganda Police Force garment factory are cost-effective to the government and would always ensure quality.
