“YY Bus Services Suspended for 15 Days.” The Ministry of Transport and Works
The Ministry of Works and Transport in coordination with Uganda Police’s Directorate of Traffic, have resolved to suspend YY Bus operations for 15 days following a series of serious accidents linked to reckless driving. This order was issued by the state Minister for Works and Transport in the Ugandan cabinet, Honourable Byamukama Fred on the 12th May 2025 through an official letter he addressed to the YY buses management.
The letter was referenced to a meeting that took place between the management of the YY coaches company and the Ministry of Transport and Works officials at the Ministry’s headquarters on 12th May 2025.
The Ministry says they are concerned about the recent series of accidents involving YY buses. On 5th May 2025, a YY bus reg. NO. UAV 701C was involved in a fatal crash at Najja village Buikwe District on Kampala – Katosi – Jinja Highway in which three (3) people lost their lives. Preliminary findings by the Uganda Police indicated that the driver of the bus was at fault and that the said driver is still on the run.
A second accident involving another YY bus Reg. NO. UAX 852F which was heading to Yumbe from Kampala was involved in a serious crash at Ayango on the Pakwach -Arua Highway. Preliminary findings from Uganda Police Force also showed that the driver was attempting to overtake a vehicle and lost control of the bus leading to the crash.
“The two crashes point to recklessness by the company’s drivers on the road and failure to control the conduct of your drivers, among other managerial concerns.” The ministry stated.
The purpose of this letter therefore, was to inform YY coaches management that Ministry of Works and Transport has suspended their bus operations on all the routes that they operate on for 15 (fifteen) days with effect from Tuesday, 13th May 2025.
During this Suspension, authorities will:
Inspect driver badges and permits, Review driver schedules and training history, Investigate the use of aged, possibly underqualified drivers.
The Buses’ Operations may resume after a full review.
