The Uganda Electoral Commission (EC) has officially released a revised roadmap for the 2025/2026 General Elections, outlining updated timelines for voter activities, candidate nominations, campaigns, and polling ahead of the highly anticipated 2026 General Elections.
The revised roadmap, issued by EC Chairperson Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, adjusts several key electoral milestones to ensure compliance with electoral laws, improve administrative efficiency, and allow adequate time for campaigns and dispute resolution.
According to the Electoral Commission, the adjustments were made after internal reviews, stakeholder consultations, and lessons learned from previous election cycles.
“The revised roadmap is intended to align electoral activities with constitutional requirements while allowing sufficient time for nominations, campaigns, and post-nomination processes,” Justice Byabakama said in an official EC statement.
The Commission emphasized that the changes were administrative, not political, and aimed at strengthening transparency and preparedness ahead of polling.
Under the updated Uganda Electoral Commission 2026 roadmap:
- Voter-related activities, including register updates and verification, were prioritized early in the cycle
- Special Interest Group (SIG) elections for youth, older persons, and persons with disabilities were scheduled before general nominations
- Local government nominations were phased to reduce congestion and logistical strain
- Presidential nominations were moved forward to allow longer national campaigns
- Polling for presidential, parliamentary, and local government elections was aligned within a defined constitutional window
The EC reaffirmed that January–February 2026 remains the polling period for the 2026 General Elections Uganda, in line with Article 61 of the Constitution.
Uganda’s previous elections, particularly in 2016 and 2021, were marked by legal petitions, logistical challenges, and disputes over timelines. Analysts and civil society groups have long urged the EC to release election schedules early and avoid late-stage changes.
By revising the roadmap in mid-2025, the Commission says it is responding to those concerns and minimizing risks of confusion for voters, candidates, and political parties.
The EC has called on political parties, candidates, civil society organizations, and voters to study the revised roadmap carefully and adhere strictly to the timelines provided.
Justice Byabakama urged Ugandans to participate peacefully and responsibly:
“Elections are a process, not an event. Every stakeholder has a duty to respect the law and contribute to a peaceful and credible electoral process.”
For voters, the revised roadmap provides clarity on:
- Voter registration and verification periods
- Issuance of Voter Location Slips Uganda
- Polling timelines for different electoral categories
For candidates, it offers predictability around:
- Presidential nomination dates Uganda
- Parliamentary and local government nominations
- Official campaign periods regulated by law
With the roadmap now finalized, the Electoral Commission says its focus will shift to implementation, voter education, and logistical readiness nationwide.
The EC reiterated that it remains committed to delivering free, fair, and credible elections as Uganda prepares for one of its most consequential democratic exercises.
