President Museveni officiated the ground-breaking ceremony for the 132kv Kole-Gulu-Nebbi-Arua transmission line.
The 132kV Kole-Gulu-Nebbi-Arua Transmission Project will evacuate electricity from Karuma, Agago and Nyagak dams, making electricity supply in West Nile more reliable and connecting the region to the national grid.
The President also commissioned an 8MW Electro-Maxx thermal power plant managed by Mr Patrick Bitature an established businessman and enterprenuer in the Country.
The President said that some people had tried to politicize the issue of electricity supply to West Nile but reality was that government did not have enough money to achieve the goal.
“However, as revenues improve, you can see that we are upgrading the infrastructure and it will get better. This will complement government’s efforts to power the region and industrialise it.”
The availability of stable electricity supply will attract investors to set up more factories in the sub-region to solve the challenge of unemployment and idle-ism which has led to drug abuse among the youth in the West-Nile.
The Fountain of Honor also opened Arua Agriculture Value Addition Facility.
The Facility, is a Ministry of Local Government project aiming at processing 250,000kg of cereals per day.
At the moment, West-Nile expects to reap Shs15 billion annually from the value addition project which will involve 30,000 farmers who previously grew tobacco but have now changed to food crops, especially cereals for an income and as a food security measure to sustain their families.
The areas’ proximity to the markets of DR Congo and South Sudan is being used to target and boost Uganda’s trade activity.
