Opposition chief-whip Nambeshe survives mob. The Opposition Chief Whip John Baptist Nambeshe has survived being lynched by an angry mob after knocking a person.
Nambeshe who was from Kampala heading to Mbale on Saturday knocked a not yet identified person at Namwezi stretch (Mbikko) along Kampala-Jinja highway in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District.
‘‘Some of the doors of my car cannot even open. It was not fatal but the one who knocked me and horribly hit my car got seriously injured,’’ Nambeshe said.
The Eastern opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party Deputy President says the victims of the accident sustained injuries but no one died.
‘‘I am rushing to a hospital now because a physician told me I need to do more tests to be sure if I didn’t suffer a blood clot or other similar conditions,’’ he disclosed.
Juma Kanamwangi, an eyewitness says that when Nambeshe refused to stop, Boda Boda cyclists followed his vehicle. The cyclists intercepted Nambeshe in a traffic jam following another accident that had happened at Kisoga zone in Mbiiko.
The mob hit Nambeshe’s vehicle and threatened to set it ablaze if he does not move out.
Jimmy Lwanga the Njeru Municipality MP says that Nambeshe was identified by National Unity Platform-NUP supporters and the police who rescued him. He was later driven to Njeru Police Station where he recorded a statement.
Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa Regional Police Spokesperson says that the injured victim was rushed to Jinja Hospital.
The minister of works and transport Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala at the opening of the road safety summit at the Kampala Serena Hotel in January 2021 ordered the Traffic Police to reinstate Operation Fika Salama among other interventions to contain the recklessness among motorists that had resulted in increased fatalities. The minister emphasized that the situation required special treatment.
Operation Fika Salama was a special intervention on accidents, pioneered in 2016 by the Uganda National Road Authority (UNRA) enforced by the Traffic Police and other security organs as well as the works and transport ministry among other stakeholders in enforcing the traffic regulations to reduced accidents on the road.
