Two people have been confirmed dead and scores injured in an explosion in a Swift Bus at Lungala, Mpigi Town Council, Police have said.
The incident involving the bus registration number UAU 989T took place at around 5:20 pm. The bus was heading to Bushenyi.
Faridah Nampiima, the Traffic Police Spokesperson says that among the injured is Kityo Mwanga, the Regional Police Commander (RPC) for Greater Bushenyi.
She says that they are yet to establish what exploded. “We need to investigate what exploded, we have secured the scene and investigations are ongoing,” she said.
The explosion comes three days after the bomb attack in Komamboga.
Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga said the scene has been cordoned off pending a thorough assessment and investigation by the bomb experts.
On Saturday night, an explosion occurred at a small eatery Georon next to the famous Digida Pork joint in Komamboga. The explosion reportedly left one person dead and three injured.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for a bomb attack that killed at least one person in Kampala on Saturday night, the militant group said in a statement posted in an affiliated Telegram channel late on Sunday.
The group said that some of its members detonated an explosive device in a bar where “members and spies of the Crusader Ugandan government were gathering” in Kampala on Sunday.
The bomb, packed with nails and shrapnel, targeted a pork restaurant on the outskirts of the capital, police said.
Information gathered indicated that three men, disguised as customers, visited the restaurant, placed a polythene bag under a table, and left moments before the explosion, police said.
The explosions come weeks after the United Kingdom had warned that terrorists could carry out an attack in Uganda, but police said there was no need to elevate the threat levels.
In a statement on Thursday last week, the UK government called on their nationals to be extremely vigilant about their security “especially in crowded and public places like hotels, transport hubs, restaurants and bars, and during major gatherings like sporting or religious events”.
“Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners. UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack,” the statement reads.
